History

Okeechobee Lodge, nestled along the shores of Lake Huron at the entrance to Baie Fine, boasts a rich and colorful history. Constructed in the early 1940s by a Toronto plumber named Stanfield, the lodge was built using local logs and stone. The name “Okeechobee” was inspired by Lake Okeechobee in Florida, with “Okeechobee” meaning “Big Water”—a fitting moniker for its expansive waterfront setting

Originally established as a high-end fishing camp, Okeechobee Lodge quickly became a sought-after destination for affluent American tourists. Its secluded location, accessible only by boat, made it an ideal retreat for those seeking privacy. Notably, the lodge attracted members of the Chicago mob during the 1940s and 1950s, who were drawn to its exclusivity and tranquility.

About us

Okeechobee Lodge is a secluded, historic retreat nestled along the rugged shores of Lake Huron in Ontario, Canada. Situated between McGregor Point and Frazer Point, the lodge marks the entrance to Baie Fine, renowned as one of the world’s largest freshwater fjords. This 15-kilometer inlet, characterized by its white quartzite cliffs and pristine waters, is a highlight of the Georgian Bay region .
Accessible only by boat, Okeechobee Lodge offers a unique escape into nature. The lodge provides accommodations in cabins and cottages, each equipped with modern amenities. Guests can enjoy various recreational activities, including hiking trails that offer panoramic views of Frazer Bay and access to a private beach. For those interested in water activities, the lodge offers canoe, paddleboard, and fishing equipment rentals .
The lodge’s marina is equipped to accommodate vessels of various sizes, offering 30, 50, and 100 AMP electrical services. While fuel and pump-out services are currently unavailable, the marina provides essential amenities such as Wi-Fi, restrooms, showers, and laundry facilities .
Steeped in history, Okeechobee Lodge has hosted notable guests over the years, including two U.S. presidents. Its rich past and picturesque setting make it a cherished destination for those seeking tranquility and a touch of nostalgia in the heart of Ontario’s wilderness.
